A betrothal masque is performed for the party by some of Prospero's magical spirits; Juno, Ceres, and Iris are the goddesses who are represented within the masque, and the play speaks about the bounties of a good marriage, and blesses the happy couple. This act of magic so captivates Prospero that he forgets Caliban's plot to kill him; for a moment, he almost loses control, but manages to pull himself out of his reverie and take action

Caliban's evil plot got thwarted by Prospero and Aerial when:

• Caliban, Stephano, and Trinculo arrive in search of Prospero, stealing a few of his garments along the way. Caliban still wants to kill Prospero and carry out this plot; however, Trinculo and Stephano are extremely drunk, as usual, and are incapable of anything other than petty theft.
• Prospero catches them—not difficult given the amount of noise they make.
• Prospero summons Ariel, the air spirit, and orders him to foil Caliban's murder plot. Ariel informs him that he lured the two drunken rouges through prickly bushes, thorns, and shrubs into a filthy pool using his musical tune.
