explanation of why carbon atom form large no. of compound is that, they have only 4 valance electron, so for completing its octate it reuires 4 other electron, and gainig or sharing four electron  is much easier than the losing of 4 electron, due to this they have terta-valaency, means they can share their all four electon with other element to form compound and complete its octate and have property of catenation, due to which they are capable to form large number of compound.
