Like other elements carbon cannot afford to lose or gain electrons because

If it gains 4 electrons the nucleus with 6 protons will not be able to hold the 10 electrons all together.

It is not possible to lose four electrons and remain with just 2 electrons and a lot of energy is required and this 6 proton with 2 electron is not possible.

Therefore carbon forms bonds by sharing electrons.
This is called covalent bonds.

Carbon shares its electrons with other carbon atoms or other atoms to become stable , that is attain noble gas configuration.

For example ,

Carbon shares its four electrons with 4 hydrogen atoms to form CH4.
Here a single covalent bond is formed.
