Cardiac muscle is under involuntarycontrol. It contracts rhythmically under control from the autonomic nervous system and is not under conscious control. It has a greater number of mitochondria than skeletal muscle due to the need for continual contractions (function: transport of blood).
Voluntary muscle (skeletal muscle) can be controlled voluntarily to bring about movement of the skeleton (function). Skeletal muscle has different fibre types (Type I, Type IIa, Type IIb) depending on the endurance requirement and speed of contraction required.
Smooth muscle is under involuntary control and non-striated (unlike skeletal muscle). It’s function is mainly in the gut and internal organs.
