It is basically a chemical process. To tell you in simple terms, each kind of cell has a set chemicals within it. When we charge a cell, the set of chemicals (call it set A) gets converted into another set of chemicals (call it set B). When this conversion is complete, we say that the cell is charged. Electrical energy is now stored in form of chemical energy. If we charge the cell further, it will only heat up the cell.
