You see the entire universe is made up of tiny atoms.
Now these atoms have a certain amount of energy and energy capacity
So when heat is supplied to atoms they gain energy
This heat energy is converted to kinetic energy(if we could do this efficiently, our energy crisis would be solved to an extent lol)
With a gain in kinetic energy these move faster and further away and it overcomes the Force of attraction (or Van de Vaal force in graphite)
Hence the more the heat the further away the atoms are
Hence it directly affects the state of matter
