Not only in plants it has the same purpose for animals too. The reason is chromosomes are made of DNA. DNA contain genes which are the heredity unit of life. It's through the genes that characters of an organism gets transferred to the next generation. Without them no reproduction is possible for organisms be it plants or animals.
