Comparison to peers and siblings is one of the worst possible things which can be done to a child.
For decades we have witnessed parents comparing children to their class fellows, and siblings, however, even though their aim is to motivate the child, this is one of the worst possible ways to do so.
When a child gets compared to his/her peers, in fact even an adult, that person starts doubting his/her capabilities. They become less confident in their work and approach, to such an extent that they might not even raise their hands to answer a question asked, even if they knew the answer. This is so because comparison breaks confidence levels. And if compared to others, while you end up on top, that boosts too much ego.
Thus people should be compared to themselves. Its good to set a standard and benchmarks, but not to do criticism based on comparative analysis for peers.
