Answer:

To begin with, anyone who uses the road can be a potential cause of an accident, be it a driver, a cyclist or a pedestrian. The main reason is the breaking of rules.

Competence of the driver- Driving requires one to follow many rules simultaneously. For instance, while negotiating a round-about, a driver has to watch out for other vehicles, traffic lights and also give indicators appropriately. Thus, a driver’s skills are tested each time he gets on the road. Further, if someone does not follow rules and drives rashly, a competent driver can skillfully veer out of the way and save himself. This is where the driver’s competence comes into play. Underage drivers are considered incompetent, since their faculties are not as mature as they should be.

Substance abuse- Substance abuse refers to addiction to substances that are illegal. Any sort of addiction affects the brain, one’s alertness levels and the capability to think rationally. Thus, driving under the influence of any substance endangers the lives of the driver and others around.

Cyclists- Since cyclists do not have a license, they cannot be issued traffic violation slips. This makes them careless and they often disregard traffic rules. They do not wait for the light to turn green and often ride on the wrong side, posing a threat to oncoming traffic.

Pedestrians- Pedestrians tend to cross busy roads at unwarranted points. As a result, motorists have to apply sudden brakes which can cause collisions. So, though the pedestrians may cross the road unharmed, they can put the lives of many people at stake.

Possible solutions to avoid accidents:

1.Curb underage driving. Parents need to understand that letting minors drive is illegal and may end up being fatal for the children. Schools can help stop underage driving too.

2. Keep a check on rash driving. In America when rash driving is reported by other drivers on the road, the police comes into action. They stop the rash driver and check if he is under the influence of any substance. If cops and citizens both keep a check on rash driving, the trend will definitely decrease.

3. Follow traffic rules. If everyone followed traffic rules sincerely, whether it is a motorist, cyclist or a pedestrian, there would be no issues. This also includes details such as giving indicators at turns.
