Answer:

The copper IUD works by stopping the sperm and egg meeting and changing the lining of the uterus/womb. This makes it difficult for a fertilised egg to stick to the lining to start a pregnancy. When it is first inserted (put in) it starts working straight away to prevent pregnancy.

Answer:

ACOG representatives told me in an email that copper IUDs mostly work before implantation occurs—copper is toxic to sperm and kills it before it gets to the egg. ... And when used in that way, the copper-laden environment might also prevent the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus.
