A lateral ring of meristematic tissue found in woody seed plants, producing cork on the outside of the ring and phelloderm on the inside of the ring. Also called phellogen.

It also prevents the loss of water by evaporation.The outer protective layer or bark of a tree is known as the cork. It is made up of dead secondary meristematic cells. As the meristem die they form multiple layers around the previously formed bark.
