How does CuO2 act as both oxidant and reductant? Explain with proper reactions showing the change in oxidation numbers in each example. ​

Cu 2 O undergoes disproportionation to form Cu 2+ and Cu.

(i) When heated in air, Cu 2 O is oxidized

CuO;4 CI+5 O 3→ CI −−1+3 CI+7 O 4− + 21 O 2 →2 Cu+2O and Cu 2O

and Cu 2O acts as a reductant and reduces O 2 to O 2−

(ii) When heated with Cu 2 S it oxidizes S 2− to SO 2and

Hence Cu 2O acts as an oxidants

2 Cu 2+1 O+ Cu 2+1 S→6 Cu0+SO 2
