Tree roots hold the soil in place and prevent from soil erosion.
When the trees are cut down in large quantity i.e deforestation the soil gets eroded in a large amount and thus leads to landslide

This is due to the fact that there is no forest trees left to hold the soil after deforestation. As a result, shear strength decreases and landslides are more prone to occur.
