The electrolyte and the electrodes used in electrolysis form an electrolytic cell. When electricity passes through an electrolyte, the positive ions of the electrolyte move towards the cathode (negative electrode), where they gain electrons to become a neutral substance.

Electrolysis is the process by which ionic substances are decomposed (broken down) into simpler substances when an electric current is passed through them. Forelectrolysis to work, the ions must be free to move. Ions are free to move when an ionic substance is dissolved in water or molten (melted).
