People throw around the word democracy the way Americans throw around socialism. It seldom means what they actually think it does. To that point, there is no democracy in the world that I am aware of. There are plenty of representative democracies, though.

The reason that there are no democracies is that on a nationwide scale, they simply do not work. You cannot take a nationwide vote on every single thing that needs to be done.

As for does democracy and inequality go hand-in-hand... yes, in the same way as a dictatorship and inequality do or theocracy and inequality do. One is a state of governance and the other is a state of life. There is always going to be inequality in life but governments that attempt to address it will do better normally than those that allow it to get out of control.
