It occurs through the process of diffusion.

In unicellular organisms, the 'exchange of gases' takes place by the process of diffusion.

EXPLANATION:

Unicellular organisms are usually aquatic and the surface area of their cell membranes is very large. This enables the cell membrane to facilitate 'exchange of gases'.

In diffusion, particles move from higher concentration to lower one. The unicellular organisms use this diffusion to take gases from the environment when needed. When the gas level in the organism is more, it releases the gas into the environment.
