When the crops are growing, farmers must water (or rely on rainfall), weed and kill crop pests. Once the crops are mature, the farmer will harvest them. Farmers need resources to grow food.

then they sow seeds or part of plant which will further developes into new plant (also cost a lot for them )
then they must have to take care of crops (protects their crops as their kid)
they water crops regularly
protects them from weeds and pests by usin' weedicide and pesticides respectively( it costs a lot for them )
and hense crops get matured
it takes a long period of time
