- Lipids are divided into Monoglycerides, Diglycerides and Triglycerides on the basis of number of glycerol chains present in the molecule.
- Triglycerides are commonly known as Fats
- The first step of digestion of fats is Emulsification. The action of breaking down fats into smaller substances called Fat Globules by Bile Juice. Emulsification of Fats occurs in the duodenum.
- Later the enzymes of the class Lipases act on the substrate decomposing it into monoglycerides and fatty acids
- Fatty Acids and Monoglycerides diffuse through the intestinal wall, eventually reassembling into Triglycerides
- Together with Phospholipids, they further form lipo-protinaceous micelles termed as Chylomicrons, which are large and have a water soluble coat
- Chylomicrons are able to pass through the lymphs nodes and eventually into the main blood stream
- Finally, they are transported to the parts of storage like skin, protective covers of visceral organs etc

Absorption of fats:
★ Fatty acids + glycerol → micelle ( intestinal lumen )
★ Micelle → Chylomicron (Lipoprotein)
★ Lymph vessels (Lacteal) → Left thoracic lymphatic duct
★ Sub Clavian → Vena cava
Mechanism of absorption:
- Passive / Simple diffusion ( No energy )
- Facilitated transport (No energy and carrier Protein)
- Active transport (Energy) → Against concentration gradient
★ Water is absorbed by osmosis.
1. Absorption in buccal cavity :
Certain drugs example nitroglycerin :
- treat acute chest pain (Angina)
- Kept below tongue
2. Absorption in stomach :
- Water
- Simple sugar
- Alcohol
3. Absorption in small intestine :
- Principle site of absorption → Maximum in jejenum.
4. Absorption in large intestine :
- Water
- mineral
- drugs
- E - coli in colon → Produces vitamin B1, B2, B12 and K.
- Absorbed.
