Fear might help in the development of humans in the sense that specific forms of fear could be a motivational factor in progressing as individuals and as a society. For example, a fear of accomplishing less than, and lagging behind others is something that could push someone to work harder. An individual who fears failing or being fired for accomplishing less than another co-worker or student could end up putting in more time and effort into their work, and thus, find that they develop new skills in the process. As a society, a nation or government may fear that they are not as well established as another, and thus, work to improve their flaws such as to better the living conditions of their people.

Another form of fear may be the fear of the unknown, in that humans are constantly pushed to discover new things as they fear what they do not know or understand. For example, it may lead to scientists exploring the oceans and finding previously undiscovered organisms. Fear of death has also pushed individuals to finding cures for several diseases, which is a huge progress and step forward for humanity.
