You get energy from the food you eat in the form of calories. Although there are several different classes of essential nutrients, calories are provided by only three. These nutrients – carbohydrates, protein and fat – are called macronutrients because your body needs them in large amounts to function properly.
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates contain 4 calories per gram. Although they're often given a bad rap in the diet world, the Food and Nutrition Board actually recommends that most of your calories – or 45 to 65 percent – come from carbohydrates. If you follow a typical 2,000-calorie diet, this means that 900 to 1,300 calories should come from carbohydrates. When choosing carbohydrates, opt for whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products and legumes, rather than refined grains, processed foods, full-fat dairy products and sweets.

Hope it's helps
