Fracking uses a high pressure injection of water, sand and chemical to break open subterranean shale and hold the newly formed fissures open so that oil and gas can seen to the wellhead and pumped to the surface

it's a process that has been used around traditional wells for decades as a way to coax more production from a reservoir.

in combination with horizontal drilling however it has allowed access to vast quantities of previously inaccessible oil and natural gas
