As our sperms carries male gamate through vagina and ovary releases oocytes that is female gamate both of them meet each other. And the sperm carrying male gamate fuses female gamate and a Zygote is form which has characteristics of both mother as well as father this process of zygote formation is know to be as fertilization as the ovum is fertilized here and the point which I should include early is the sexual reproduction is totally based on fusion of two gamates if gamate is not fused then no young one could be born from the females womb.
