Gaston does not have to try hard to make Mrs. Al Smith believe that he is the owner of the house. As we already know Mrs. Al Smith is an impatient woman who wants the possession of the things she likes at any cost. In her hurry she mistakes Gaston for the owner's husband, and Gaston very cleverly seizes the opportunity of striking a profitable deal with her. He does not feel the need of correcting her. So she makes the deal about the villa with him.
