Gulliver won over the emperor, his retinue, the army and common men alike by showing clemency to six ringleaders who were trying to annoy and hurt Gulliver by shooting arrows at him. On the orders of the colonel on guard, these ringleaders were caught and handed over to Gulliver to be punished by him as he thought proper. But Gulliver, in stead of punishing them, set them free. This magnanimous act of kindness won everyone's heart, including the emperor's in his favour. Their apprehensions about his intentions were dispelled. The emperor granted him so many favours after this episode.
