Though Helen was good at hand spelling and natural spelling, going to college posed to be quite a challenge. Following lectures at a normal pace, and also the fact that the instructors had no prior experience in teaching student with special needs was something that hampered her progress. Miss Sullivan tried her best to spell the lessons out for Helen, and the other instructors too, tried to learn ways to help her. Helen took special classes, and would type lessons from memory after her classes, hence it was through sheer hard work and diligence that Helen overcame the hurdles in her way.
