Ernst Hemingway in this story narrates that due to the attack of the fascists during the Spanish Civil War all the innocent and ordinary people are about to die. The old man was so much worried about his animals that he was unwilling to move ahead. Even after being told by the soldier (the narrator) that the place is not safe to rest and he should leave but he did not do so. So he dies at the end.
