From a purely short-term perspective, it doesn't; but humans live a long time. Overtime environmental degradation affects and speeds up our aging process, increases the likelihood of us being exposed to diseases, increases the possibility of us being poisoned through our food, denies us nutrients and access to healthy foods that are necessary for our survival, creates an environment that may stress us and our loved ones and leads to a future in which our children live shorter lives and smaller dreams. The difficulty for us as a species is that so few of us are good at long-term planning and many of us appear to only think of the short-term.
Naturalists describe in their journals over the past 200 to 300 years in the United States how the ecosystems, bioregions, ecological diversity and the very soil quality of North America has decreased. Have you seen the great Buffalo herds of the Midwest Millions strong? The Wolves the size of a horse that hunted them? Have you seen the passenger pigeons that pass in their hundreds of millions of numbers every fall and spring in their Great Migration along the Midwest of the United States? Or the Cod of New England that are so numerous that one has only to lean and net over the side of a boat to catch one? Have you seen the rich soil of the Prairie Land 28 feet deep in some places? Have you seen the great Forest that stretches from Maine to as far away as Mississippi? So that a squirrel may pass without touching the ground from the Waters of the Atlantic ocean in Bar Harbor Maine too the great Mississippi River? Have you eaten a piece of wild caught fish that does not contain PCP's or a portion of plastic?
You have not seen these things nor will anyone you ever meet who is alive today. They have all passed into history. And as each of these great national natural treasures have disappeared they have stood as a warning to the human race. On that sign it reads beware least you follow. Yes — any one of them does not matter, is not important in the grand scheme of History — If we would stop, but will we? Have we do we desire to?
