Hydrogen gas is highly flammable. It forms explosive mixtures with air. The reaction of H2 with atmospheric oxygen is explosively fast. The pop sound you hear is a mini shock wave. If the H2 is collected in a balloon about 10–15cm in diameter the pop become a very loud “bang”.

The pop sound comes from the small explosion formed by the burningof Hydrogen with oxygen. Other common gasses, such as water vapour, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide will not burn with oxygen, so willnot give a pop.
