A single phase induction motor requires separate starting circuitry to provide a rotating field to the motor. The normal running windings within such a single-phase motor can cause the rotor to turn in either direction, so the starting circuit determines the operating direction.

It works on the principle of rotating magnetic field.

When three phase supply is given to the stator , it produces rotating magnetic field. Due to the relative motion between the magnetic field and the rotor windings , emf is induced in the coils and hence current is induced in the coils. Current's direction is known by the Flemings right hand rule. Now we know that when a current conducting conductor is placed in the magnetic field , magnetic force acts on the coils. Force direction is known by Flemings left hand rule. After analyzing you will get to know that the rotor will rotate in the same direction of the rotating magnetic field. Due to the force , torque acts on the rotor. This is the working principle of Induction motor.
