hey dear!!
when we breath in or inhale our diaphragm contracts and move downwards. This increases the space in our chest cavity, into which our lungs expand. The intercoastal muscles between our ribs also help enlarge the chest cavity. They contract to pull our rib cage both upward and downward, when we inhale.
Exhalation happens due to elastic properties of the lungs as well as the internal intercoastal muscles which lower the rib cage and decreases thoracic volume. As the thoracic diaphragm relaxes during exhalation it causes the tissue it has depressed to rise superiorly and put pressure on the lungs to expel the air.
It does happen during inhalation and exhalation...
:-) .Hope this help u. :-)
