It is practised in hilly areas. It is helpful for better growth of crops on hills. The slopes of hill are cut in the form of step.

The step farming is helpful in conservation of soil as by cutting steps the erosion of soil is almost stopped. Now the top layer of soil which is fertile does not get eroded when water flows over it. Thus the soil is conserved and can be used to grow crops successfully for many-many years.
