From his own personal experience in his childhood when he was shunned by his fellow classmates, hai mother was the one taught him the importance of being unique. And for since then he had abide by this thought. He believed that changing onself just because others doesn't like you is not ideal. You should be the one you are, thrive to retain a unique identity people will learn to accept you and this thought of his reflects in his version of ending of the story. So he justified that in the end the Roger skunk retained his own smell and gradually all the other animals accepted him.
