Vietnamese nationalists were deeply inspired by Japan and China to set up a democratic republic.
This is explained from the examples stated below
(i) In the first decade of the 20th century, ‘Go-East Movement’ became popular and some 300 Vietnamese students went to Japan to acquire modern education. They wanted to overthrow puppet emperor and re-establish the Nguyen dynasty with the help of Japan’s military capability.
(ii) In 1911 under the leadership of Sun-Yat-Sen, China overthrew the long established monarchy in China and set up a republic. Inspired by this incident, Vietnamese students organised the . Association for the Restoration of Vietnam to establish a democratic republic.

3. Vietnamese students established the Restoration Society in Tokyo but the Japanese Ministry of Interior disallowed it. They were deported and forced to flee to China and Thailand.

4. In China, a republic was set up under the leadership of Sun Yat-sen in 1911 after overthrowing the monarchy.
