Hey man, your assumption is wrong, but your intuition is correct. A gas has more movement and hence has more kinetic energy and less potential energy. During a change of state, that is what happens. When a liquid turns into a gas, there is an increase in kinetic energy and a subsequent decrease in potential energy. This sums up to total energy of the change of state (or the total energy after this transformation of state occurs)
