Answer:

Symbolism, personification

Explanation:

In ”The Lemon Orchard” by Alex la Guma, the story is set during the apartheid era in South Africa. When black people did not have the same rights as white people.

The clouds are described as “Dirty cotton wool”, which may be significant as the author suggests that the things that are going to happen to the coloured man are not right. Clouds are usually described as white, to symbolise beauty, peace and innocence. The author describes clouds dirty, here, means that the nature is tainted, unfair and unjust.

There is further symbolism, in which the moon is described as being “hidden”. By hiding the moonlight at the beginning of the story la Guma is symbolically suggesting that people hid themselves away when it came to racism in South Africa. No white ever stood up for the blacks. Later in the story, the moons shows itself in the sky, which suggests that what is to happen the coloured man is something that is known and witnessed by all.

The crickets also symbolise the human nature. The crickets near the men stop creeping whereas those afar continue to make noises. The author may be suggesting from this that the crickets far away(humans) are turning a blind eye on what is happening, whereas those who are near the men, support the wrong doings.
