A landfill is the properly designed structure which is built on the top of the ground where the waste is dumped.

Explanation:

  • A landfill is a waste disposal site which is built to concentrate the waste in the form of compact layers so as to reduce the volume of the waste.
  • A landfill also controls the seepage or leakage of liquids and gases from the waste thus protect the environment against water, and air pollution.
  • The difficult wastes like solid waste, fecal sludge are disposed off in the landfill otherwise they are mainly discharged in the water body.
  • The hazardous wastes is ash, asbestos and other are also dumped in a landfill.

Landfilling act as an important method of waste disposal as it reduced large amounts of waste on a daily basis.

Explanation:

  • The landfills are also known as rubbish dump, garbage disposal units and are used for waste management purposes such as sorting and recycling.
  • The landfills act and waste disposal or management units and perform two forms of operations. Confining waste to small areas and compacts the wastes to reduce volume.
  • They cover the waste material with layers of soil and even include parts of the wood. Before the processing, these units segregate the sanitary wastes which are intended for bioreactors.
  • This is followed by the transitional phase where the decreased oxygen leads to the creation of carbon dioxide gas.
  • The third phase is an acid formation that is organic in nature and decreases the concentration of pH values. The fourth phase is methane fermentation where the oxygen is reduced and methane and carbon are produced.
  • It reduces a large number of of wastes and gives out less residue. Hazardous wastes can also be disposed of through these mechanisms. It makes inorganic wastes as organic.
