Answer:

A landfill site (also known as a tip, dump, rubbish dump, garbage dump or dumping ground and, historically, as a midden[1]) is a site for the disposal of waste materials. Landfill is the oldest and most common form of waste disposal, although the systematic burial of the waste is a modern development. In the past, refuse was simply left in piles or thrown into pits.

Some landfill sites are also used for waste management purposes, such as temporary storage, consolidation and transfer, or for various stages of processing waste material, such as sorting, treatment, or recycling. Unless they are stabilized, landfills may experience severe shaking or soil liquefaction of the ground during a large earthquake.

Landfilling as a method of waste disposal

Explanation:

The process of dumping waste materials on a barren plot of land after compressing it is commonly known as landfilling. It is one of the most common methods of waste disposal.

Garbage and non toxic waste products collected from houses and offices are compressed with the help of a trash compactor to decrease their volume. This compressed mass is then taken out to the landfill site and dumped.

Although landfilling is not a perfect solution for waste management, it prevents urban and rural pollution. Rather than polluting the streets and drains of cities, the waste is collected at one convenient location and can be segregated into different groups according to its importance towards recycling. It also prevents the pollution of water bodies like lakes and rivers by reducing the amount of waste materials that are dumped directly into them.

Landfills are not suitable for toxic and radioactive waste materials. These materials can leach into the underground water table and can cause a plethora of diseases in people.
