At first Lavinia did not take up the issue seriously as she believed her Husband John. But later when everyone's board showed John's name along with a lady called Helen, Lavinia became suspicious.

She thought that her husband had played in the life of Helen causing Helen's death due to John's Betrayal. This was just a thought running through everyone's mind.

To know the opinion of John, she had inquired him in front of the members of the book club. But unfortunately, John did not heed to respond and ran to his bedroom and lied down.

This made Lavinia think that her thoughts were true and started to lose belief on John and hence moved forward in seeking Divorce.
