lightning causes high temperatures which results in a reaction between nitrogen and oxygen present in air to produce oxides of nitrogen. These dissolve in rainwater forming dilute nitric acid . The nitric acid reacts with the alkalis of the soil to turn into nitrates.

the enormous energy of lightning breaks nitrogen nitrogen molecules and enables their atoms to combine with oxygen in the air forming nitrogen oxides. These dissolves in rain, forming nitrates,t hat are carried to earth.
Atmospheric nitrogen fixation probably contributes some 5-8•/• of the total nitrogen fixed.
