Atmospheric Fixation. The
enormous energy of lightning
breaks nitrogen molecules and
enables their atoms to combine
with oxygen in the air forming
nitrogen oxides. These dissolve
in rain, forming nitrates, that are
carried to the earth.

Due to lightning nitrogen molecules breaks and enables the atoms of it to combine with oxygen forming nitrogen oxides. These then dissolve in rain and form nitrates which are then carried to the Earth.
