Answer:

Lightning is the effect of static electricity. The clouds get electrically charged when they are rubbed together by wind. Usually the rubbed clouds of opposite charges discharge and cause a thunder and a flash of light.

When the negatively charged clouds go away from the opposite charged clouds and come close to high buildings, hills, trees, chimneys, etc, they form positive charge at the top of the structures by pushing away the negative charges downwards. Now, the negatively charged clouds discharge the buildings, trees, etc. It is called lighting which destroys life and properties.

Lightning occurs due to the concept of static electricity .

Firstly clouds are formed by evaporation . They are made up of water vapour and dust particles . Now these clouds are somehow charged when they rub against other clouds .

Whenever there is a rubbing of clouds , there is charge transfer and this is called static electricity .

The clouds acquire a certain charge and when they are over oppositely charged structures , then an attraction builds up between that structure and the cloud .

This leads to the lightning , a spark of electric current falls on the particular structure . This spark is called lightning streak and the sound heard after lightning is called thunder .

Some basic concepts of static electricity :

➡ Charges are transferred while there is friction between two bodies .

➡ The like charges repel and the unlike charges attract .

The housetops , surfaces during rain become wet and hence become good conductors of electricity .

Thus lightning takes place .

The phenomenon of lightning is very dangerous as sometimes it leads to death of people , electric fire and damage of property even .
