the reason for lighting strike a building is because when a cloud passes above the building they build up charge opposite ...when they are full charged they inonizeses the air around it and hence lighting strikes the building.

When a negatively charged cloud passes over a high-rise building, it induces positive
charges on the top of the building and negative charges at its base due to electric induction.
As the positive charges attract negative charges, the free electrons from cloud start pushing
their way through moist air. This forms a sort of conducting path. When these electrons
reach the building, suddenly all the charges in cloud flow into the building. Thus an electric
discharge passes through the building which is called lightning. The lightning strikes the
building with a devastating effect and sets the building on fire.
