Lotus is a water plant which grows in water rich environment with an excessive amount of sunlight. It has various adaptations which helps it in surviving under those conditions. Some of these are:

Leaves of Lotus plant are very wide and disc shaped. This allows them to float on water and absorb large amount of sunlight.

The stem and leaf surfaces of Lotus are coated with a wax which is very difficult to wet. Therefore, it keeps the surfaces free from excessive water even in water rich environment.

Adaptations of lotus to live in water-

1. Lotus, the national flower of India, originally is an aquatic plant and has adapted to its natural habitat.

2. Lotus are generally found in marshy waterlogged areas, freshwater rivers, and ponds.

3. The leaves of a lotus exhibit a circular aperture or a shape. It is more like a disc-like appearance that allows the lotus to float. The leaves have a wide surface area that enables a sufficient amount of sunlight absorption.

4. Other parts of the lotus, for example, the stem are overlaid with a hydrophobic wax that repulses water.
