The mass media today is able to make profits from consumers and advertisers which are the the economic base for media entities.  Obviously to turn a profit the company must exceed payments from advertisers and consumers against what is spent on the daily operations of the business.  Companies must also pay back their entry costs, which may come in the form of borrowed frunds from banks of investors.  Profits are needed so that companies can reinvest to make better products for consumers. By doing so media companies can also hire more reporters and broadcasters, which in turn creat a greater spectrum of news to be broadcasted to consumers. The profit motive a media companies has allowed for a greater range of competition and sources of news and media which ultimately benefits the consumer by giving them greater perspective and more choices, thus preventing monopolies in the industry.  Although sometimes the profit motive can create barriers to entry for smaller media entities.
