Most reactive metals like Sodim andpotassium the react with oxygen as soon as they come in contact of air. Other react when they are burnt i.e., during their combustion they reacts with oxygen to form their metallic oxide which is basic in nature. LikeMagnesium (in ribbons) are burnt in air to form MgO.

Metals such as potassium, sodium and lithium react with oxygen very quickly. Calcium and magnesium are slightly less reactive and react with oxygen less quickly. Metals like copper and mercury react with oxygen very slowly and need to be heated continuously in order to see this happening.

Example--- Mg+O2------- MgO
