How does metallic character of a metal depend on the size of atom ?

metallic characters of a metal depends on size of atom as the metallic characters will increase down the group and decrease across the period...as nuclear pull inc.or dec respectively

in smaller atoms, number of electrons are less (number of shells are less) and so the electrons present in the outermost shell are closer to the nucleus which makes it difficult for an electron to move freely as nuclear force is acting on it


while in case of larger atom, the number of shells are more and so the electrons present in the outermost shell are farther from the nucleus and so less nuclear force is acting upon it and more number of electrons can move freely and so more is the metallic character


note : metals have more free electrons


and so the metallic character depends upon the size of the atom
