Mould gets its nutrition by absorption. It follows saprotrophic mode of nutrition. The mould spreads over the surface of the substrate, sending its hyphae inward of the bread to absorb the nutrients. Sugar and starch are favored by the mould, so while growing on bread, the mould takes up nutrition from the carbohydrate compounds of the bread.
