Mrs. Slater was a lady who could do any amount of straight talking to get her own way. She was not actually sad at her father’s death. Though she did wore black, she was not actually mourning. She instructed Victoria to put her white frock with a black sash on. However, all this was just to show her grief while actually she was just pretending to be in grief.
