How does mucilage layer protect slime moulds?

Spores are present in mucilageous layer and it dries and hardens the spores and prevents its dispersion by wind. The spores belonging to zygomycota gets dispersed as a unit through the slime layer. It acts as a barrier and protect the slimes from drying and maintain water balance.
