Nelson Mandela described the scheme of inauguration as a grand, majestic, and spectacular. The inauguration ceremony took place in the Amphitheatre formed by Union Buildings in Pretoria because it was the grand occasion of swearing in of Nelson Mandela as the President of South Africa. It was a historical moment as he was the first Black President to be elected after three centuries. His party African National Congress won 252 of the 400 seats in the first democratic elections of South Africa’s history. Dignitaries and politicians from more than 140 countries attended the swearing in ceremony.

After a little while South African jets did an impressive flypast  over the Union Buildings. Then two national anthems were sung -- one for the colored people, and the other for the whites.
